Shane Aspegren’s practice spans a wide range of multidisciplinary media, though at its core lies an extensive and deeply rooted history as a musician and composer. A multi-instrumentalist working across drums, percussion, synthesizers, electronics, machines, and voice, he has spent more than two decades immersed in electronic, indie, and experimental music—both as a solo artist and as a collaborator within numerous projects.
He first gained international recognition as co-founder of the Paris-based experimental electronic duo The Berg Sans Nipple (2001–2012), alongside Jerome Lorichon (aka Lori Sean Berg.) The group released multiple full-length albums and EPs and toured extensively worldwide. The two later formed an offshoot of The BSN called Ça Va Chéri and, during his years in Hong Kong, Aspegren co-founded Blood Wine or Honey, departing the trio in early 2019. Across these projects, Aspegren developed a distinct approach that balances improvisation and structure, texture and rhythm, abstraction and melody.
Beyond his own bands and solo releases—including recent works such as Emblems of Transmuting Heat, Describing The Thing, and the long-form EP Spiritual Cannibalism—Aspegren has recorded, toured, and collaborated with a broad spectrum of music and interdisciplinary artists. These include Arto Lindsay, Bright Eyes, Chin King, Conor Oberst, dj sniff, Dominique A, Don Niño, F/Lor, Françoiz Breut, Ikue Mori, Jerome Lorichon, Ken Ueno, Kung Chi Shing, Lullaby For The Working Class, Mike Ladd, Nerve, Nicolas Laureau, Preservation, Quentin Rollet, Patrick Shiroishi, Simeon Coxe (Silver Apples), Songs: Ohia, Todd Fink, Woodkid, and others. Whether as drummer, composer, electronic musician, or sound designer, his contributions are marked by sensitivity to space, rhythm, texture, and dynamic architecture.
Aspegren continues to work fluidly across the music world and contemporary art contexts, through installation, performance, moving image, and interdisciplinary projects presented internationally. His practice moves easily between sound, object, image, and spatial intervention, maintaining a relational approach that bridges composition and environment.
He has also created or collaborated on dozens of scores and soundtracks for film, television, theatre, dance, and contemporary art projects, with presentations and commissions spanning international institutions and festivals. His scoring credits include feature-length works for ARTE France and contributions to films such as Supermensch and the PBS documentary BAM 150. He has likewise collaborated with a wide array of contemporary artists, bringing his sonic sensibility into installation, performance, and interdisciplinary contexts. These include projects, collaborations, or commissions for or with Samson Young, Tarek Atoui, Manuel Pelmuș, Cody Hudson, Ari Benjamin Meyers, Ellen Pau, and many others.
Earlier in his career, he was also active in other areas of media production, spending several years as working freelance in the realm of commercial photography and set design, and even briefly as a technician for LCD Soundsystem. These experiences deepened his technical fluency and sensitivity to production and the interplay between sound, image, and physical space.
Over the past decade, his work has increasingly explored the physical and relational dimensions of sound: vibration as material, as architecture, and as embodied experience. This long-standing interest in the healing and somatic aspects of sound led to the creation of ONDO, a platform for his holistic sound and coaching practice. Established in Hong Kong in early 2020 and re-launched in Los Angeles in late 2022, ONDO reflects the convergence of Aspegren’s experimental music background with his ongoing exploration of immersive listening and the subtle physical and perceptual dimensions of vibration.
